BOOK BAGS!!!
The book bags are coming home again today! Please read the book with your child each night. It's important to reread books again and again. After reading the story several times, do the activity listed on the instruction sheet. The kinders have the directions on the yellow sheet and first graders have directions on the white sheet. On Wednesday night have your child put the journal, the book, and the instructions back into the bag so that it is ready to come back to school on Thursday morning. It is very important to the success of our program that book bags are returned each Thursday morning.

There will be no homework folders on Fridays due to the book bags.

Review of the week:
Language Arts:
We started our new handwriting program--Hand Writing Without Tears.  We are also working on holding our pencil correctly and starting letters/numbers at the top.

Math:
We continued Math Skills this week. Each group is reviewing directional words and patterns. We are also learning more about graphs. There are three kinds of graphs: real graphs, pictographs, and bar graphs. Most students are able to make a statement about the graph too.

Social Studies:
We recited our Penguin Promise this week, made our class poster, and have been working on treating others as we would want to be treated. This would also be a good promise to have your child make at home. That way they can treat their bothers or sisters the way they would want to be treated. We will be working on keeping this promise all year long!

Science:
We started learning about apples this week and talked about the different parts of an apple. This is a great unit and we will be doing many observations. If you have free time, please read some apple books at home, research apples on the web or look at the many types of apples at the grocery store.

Special Events:
Despite the heat, today's Lunch on the Lawn was a huge success. It was great to see so many parents come and join their children for lunch. This is a great monthly event to help build community in our school.

Everyone smiled nicely for their pictures this week. The yearbook is a great keepsake to remember this year at Portal. These pictures will go inside the yearbook that will be available at the end of the school year.

Have a wonderful long weekend!
